Jewels of The Gambia

Type: Wildlife Watching Tour

Dates: 22 January to 05 February 2019

photograph

Overview: The Gambia has been a popular Birdwatching destination since the 1970's and is still probably the safest African Country to visit. No wonder our tour leader Ashley has visited close to 20 times, leading two trips a year here since 2011.

As with all our trips, this is run at a relaxed pace, giving ample opportunity to enjoy the wildlife and in particular the many colourful bird species that can be found here. With 9 Kingfishers and 8 Bee-eater species for example, this guarantees to be a real feast for the eyes.

With little effort we can hope to see up to 300 bird species, with the photographers among us expecting to get quality images of a large percentage of these.

Throughout the trip we will have 3 guides and our own driver, making sure individual group members needs are catered for, so photographers for example can spend longer with a single species if they wish.

We spend time near the coast, but also travel inland to experience the real Gambia and it's various habitats and associated wildlife, including Hippo's, Bee-eater colonies, bird rich rice paddies and ancient forests.

The tour dates coincide with return flights from Birmingham and Gatwick, with just 30 minutes between the two departures, so Midlanders and those from the South East have equal opportunity to join this trip.

Please contact Ashley for a full itinerary and do check out the Gambia gallery through the link below for further temptation.

The price below does not include flights.

Birds of Prey Photography Workshop

Type: Photographic Workshop

Dates: 16 March 2019

photograph

Overview: Join me and the birds in the rural location of Hatton Country World near Warwick.
A variety of birds of prey will be available to photograph, including majestic Barn Owls, Tawny Owl, Little Owl, Merlin and the beautifully marked Kestrel.
The site has some lovely natural settings and old farm buildings, so we'll get some genuinely wild looking images.
You'll also have the opportunity to try your hand at some flight shots.
I will be available to offer guidance and tips where needed and you'll be sure to come away with some superb shots.

We limit the workshops to 10 people so as not to get in each others way and ultimately to keep disturbance to the birds to a minimum.

The day will start at 10 am and finishing at 4pm, with a break for lunch between. Lunch is not included within the price, so bring along a packed lunch.

Equipment required - Ideally a digital SLR camera, although it will be possible to get good images using a bridge or compact camera of the perched birds.
Lens choice for those using an SLR would be a short zoom, ideally between 24 and 200mm and between 200mm and 600mm for flight shots.

If you need any more information about the day, do get in touch.

Swedens Crane Migration, Grebes & Great Food

Type: Wildlife Watching Tour

Dates: 9 April to 12 April 2019

photograph

Overview: The Lake Hornborgan area of Sweden plays host to one of the most incredible bird spectacles to be seen in Europe and from late March to mid April, thousands of Common Cranes stop here to feed up on there journey to more northerly breeding grounds.

The quantity of birds varies from year to year, but we have timed this trip to catch the peak of the birds movement and hope to see between 10 and 20,000 cranes at this time, possibly more.

In 2018 the peak count reached upwards of 24,000 birds, plus of course a wide variety of wildfowl that are present at this me. A highlight of this trip will be the sight and sound of thousands of Cranes coming into the lake at dawn, which really has to be experienced.
Whooper Swans and Goldeneye that stay on to breed in the area are joined by White Fronted & Pink-footed Geese, Wigeon, Pintail, Gadwall, Teal, Shoveler, Pochard and Tufted Duck in large numbers.

Other breeding birds in the area are setting up territory at this time and very evident are the grebes. Great-crested and Little Grebes are present, but in addition Red-necked and Slavonian Grebes breed here and often Black-necked pass through at this time, so it can be a Grebe bonanza.

We also visit other areas locally which are fabulous for birdwatching, sites where we could be lucky enough to see some birds that are either very rare in the UK, or don’t occur at all. Capercaillie, Black Grouse, Black Woodpecker, Hawfinch and even Eagle Owl and Pygmy Owl.

Our base for the 3 nights is a converted water mill, where the owner prides himself on offering top quality, locally sourced and organic food and wine.
This tranquil riverside location has some wonderful local walks to enjoy and we also will have a canoe safari on one evening in search of Beaver which are relatively common in the area.
The gentle flow of the water and sound of bird song is only broken by the occasional splosh of a beaver submerging as we approach.

This break has a very relaxed pace to it and to round off the package, we have a meal in a very well recommended local restaurant on one of our evenings.

Flights are in addition to this price and are with British Airways from Heathrow, to Gothenburg and readily come in at less than £150 for an economy plus return.

The minimum number for this trip is 5, with a max of 8. There is a single supplement charge of £175, but please let us know if you are willing to share.

Trinidad & Tobago

Type: Wildlife Watching Tour

Dates: 16 April to 29 April 2019

photograph

Overview: The original inhabitants of Trinidad & Tobago, the Amerindians, referred to the islands as the 'Home of the Hummingbird'. But these beautiful islands have so much more besides these little jewels to offer the Wildlife watcher and Photographer.

Tanagers, Woodpeckers, Honeycreepers, Manikins, Herons and other water birds are all well represented. The flora you may have come across in your local florist, with Strelitzia, Heliconia and Gingers growing wild along with many many other flowers that attract butterflies and nectar drinking birds.

April is a prime to explore the caribbean, with warm and predominantly dry weather and best of all the birds are in breeding plumage and looking their best.

This trip neatly splits in two, with half the trip based at the tranquil Cuffie River Nature Retreat in the heart of Tobago and the other half at the world famous Asa Wright Nature Centre on Trinidad, which has to be on everyone's bucket list to visit.

While plenty of time is allocated on the tour to make the most of these two stunning venues, various day trips introduce us to much of the islands colourful birdlife and flora.

We will visit Little Tobago island, famous for its Red-billed Tropic Birds and Frigate Birds, who share the island with many other seabirds.

The incredible sight of hundreds of Scarlet Ibis coming in to roost at Caroni Swamp really has to be witnessed to be believed, they are such a vivid red.

Apart from other wildlife rich outings, an optional workshop on how to photograph Hummingbirds is included at the start of the tour, which could be invaluable if you want to take back some top images.

This tour is limited to just 10 places to maximise the experience.

Spanish Pyrenees Photography

Type: Wildlife Watching Tour

Dates: 14 June to 19 June 2019

photograph

Overview: The Lammergeier is one of those must see birds and this tour gives you unrivalled opportunity to get up close to these amazing creatures.

We will use purpose built photography hides, overlooking where these birds feed throughout the year, high in the Spanish Pyrenees. Three hides offer different views of the birds, plus a forth hide close by overlooking a deep valley, offers the opportunity to photograph these birds against a spectacular mountain backdrop.

Other regular raptors include, Griffon (up to 300 birds during a feed) , Monk (Black) and Egyptian Vultures, plus good chances of Golden Eagle, Goshawk and Red Kite. In fact this is one of the only sites where you'll find all 4 of Europe's Vultures in one location.

A fifth hide is set up for passerine photography, overlooking a natural pool, where regular Dartford & Subalpine Warblers, Rock & Cirl Bunting, Hoopoe, Crested Tit and plenty more besides come in to drink and bathe.

We will rotate use of each of the hides to give everyone ample opportunity of seeing and photographing each key species on the tour.

In addition to the birds, butterflies and alpine flowers are numerous and we can incorporate an additional guide to help find and identify these for you on request.

Sunsets are amazing up here at nearly 4000ft and watching these with a cold beer at the end of the day, while Nightjars, Nightingales and Scops Owl call around you is truly magical.

Overview: Sri Lanka is only the size of Ireland, and yet it is one of the most biodiverse areas in southern Asia with, for example, 244 species of Butterflies alone! The list of bird species tops 430, including 33 endemics, and with the help of a highly experienced English-speaking guide, who will be with us throughout the tour, we should see all of them, including the rare Serendib Scops Owl, which was only discovered in 2001!

Our visit coincides with the presence of winter visitors, including waders from Siberia and songbirds from the Himalayas. Burns Night, Birds & Highland Beasties

Type: Wildlife Watching Tour

Dates: 23 January to 27 January 2020

photograph

Overview: The Burns Night Gala Dinner at the Grant Arms Hotel is always fun, entertaining, with fabulous food and great service. The piper welcomes in the Haggis (other food available of course), which will be toasted by us all, led by David the hotel manager.

This great night will just be a part of this winter break in the Highlands as we visit various wildlife hotspots within the Cairngorm national park.

Snow isn't guaranteed even in this part of the world, but does add to the atmosphere of the break and we are more likely to encounter some on a trip to Cairngorm Mountain. Snow Buntings will be in the car park here at this time of year and a ride up the funicular railway gives us every chance of pure white Ptarmigan from the viewing platform.

A trip to the coast for some birdwatching can be very productive, with Waders, offshore Divers and Long-tailed Duck being targets.

We also include an evening in the heated Rothymurcus Mammal hide, hoping to see such Beasties as Pine Marten and Badger.

The Price includes -

Jewels of The Gambia

Type: Wildlife Watching Tour

Dates: 5 January to 19 January 2021
